It's never too late to chase a love you lost...
It has been fifty years since Elizabeth fell in love with Tom, and just as many since she last saw him. She is still in love with him, and is sure he still loves her too, thanks to the small blue crocus delivered to her doorstep every year in line with a promise he once made. She has kept every little note bound to those flowers, each written as a wish for the life they could have shared.
But when on the 50th anniversary the blue flower fails to arrive, she fears something has happened to the love of her life. For the first time in almost half a century, she endeavours to find out what has happened to Tom; to find out whether the love they once shared can possibly be rekindled?
Faced with the knowledge that they have only a little time left, she vows to fulfil as many of his wishes as she can. But Elizabeth is scared that her efforts risk uncovering the shameful secret she has been keeping her whole life... Can she continue to hide the truth, or will she have the courage to finally make their dreams come true?
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Suspense author Adams (Between the Lies) offers a sentimental but overcrowded tale of a lost love rekindled in her first foray into romance. Tom Hale and Elizabeth Davenport were teen sweethearts torn apart by circumstance who both went on to lead separate happy lives. Still, each year Tom leaves a blue crocus and a wish for what could have been between them on Elizabeth s doorstep to celebrate the anniversary of their first kiss. Elizabeth saves each one as a treasured sign of Tom's continued love, despite their absence in each other's lives. But on the 50th anniversary, there is no gift. Fearing the worst, Elizabeth tracks Tom down in London and discovers he is suffering from lung cancer. Elizabeth slides into his life as though no time has passed, and the couple begins fulfilling all the wishes Tom left for Elizabeth over the years. The story alternates between the present day and Tom and Elizabeth's tumultuous youth, slowly revealing the circumstances of their separation. The bittersweet present struggles to keep pace with the melodramatic past, however, leading some of the novel's most touching, climactic moments to feel muddled. Still, Adams is sure to win fans with this poignant, if improbable, love story.
