Disappointing.
I quite enjoyed a number of Emily’s books, but in a seemingly desperate attempt to ‘create drama’ in this one, she has Mark being a brutish, disrespectful bully, who is emotionally inaccessible and displays abusive and controlling behaviour, which is justified and accepted (oh, he has Daddy issues so that’s all ok). While the female lead, despite being an equally trained, skilled and capable person, accomodates his behaviours (for YEARS) in totally inappropriate situations and this is shown as ‘romance’.
The danger here is that, when he realises that he loves her and can address SOME of his Daddy issues, he will have a TOTAL personality change and become adorable and adoring, the very image of a perfect husband which is compete nonsense and a damaging narrative to many women who are in bad relationships thinking, "he’ll change when…”.
These thoughtless, cliche storylines seem irresponsible and uninspired to me in the current climate where abuse against women is rife, so to find those behaviours still presented in novels as being enticingly, irresistably passionate is a huge disappointment.
Would you want YOUR daughter, mother, aunt, sister or girl-friends to be in a relationship like this?
