Heinlein's Red Planet and Podkayne of Mars, Haldeman updates the Martian setting while keeping faith in his characters' ability to respond to unexpected challenges.

Odd journey
It felt a confused journey into messy writing but was an interesting presentation of alien life. Worth reading but left me unsatisfactorily empty about the characters
