MY UPBRINGING IN EAST GERMANY

Publisher Description

Karin Wiegemann was born in Breslau, Germany (now Wroclaw, Poland) in 1943. As a child of two pedagogues from Silesia, she became a displaced person due to the turmoil of the Second World War. She experienced the escape and resettlement of her mother, grandmother and brother to Thungria, as well as losing her father in the war; a young child left a stranger in a cold new world. Such were the childhood traumas of a generation haunted by war. Starting over in an idyllic rural world, during a time of Stalinist reconstruction, she maintained an utopian sense of hope for an egalitarian sociopolitical system. A strong woman characterised by ambition and iron clad discipline, paired with hopeless naivety, her years in Thuringia and Saxony became the basis for an atypical East German biography. These vivid and intimate moments offer a glimpse of another story yet to be told...
