An actress avoids family conflict and opts to work on herself instead in this witty, thoughtful pageturner. Mona Zahid became a success in New York City theatre as part of a maverick Shakespeare company whose founder has since been implicated in a sex scandal. On Thanksgiving Day, as she quarrels with her husband and loses patience with her in-laws, Mona announces she’s taking the dog for a walk and getting some parsley. Self-medicating with weed and painkillers, she instead opts to explore former haunts, visit an old friend turned rival, and meet with her disgraced mentor as he ponders a challenging new role. Mona Acts Out deals intelligently with the quirks of an actor’s world and the very particular obstacles faced by women in the arts. But it also adds plenty of tart humour and inspired meditations on Shakespeare’s work, and the passages from her dog’s perspective are priceless. Few novels this smart are quite this funny.
