Robert and Peter Crenshaw, who are the sons of an abusive father and an overwhelmed mother, grow up in the same circumstances, but follow opposite paths. Robert attempts to escape his past through academic excellence while Peter descends into a vortex of substance abuse. Robert becomes a respected doctor, hiding both his past and his brother.
