About the author
Jay Kristoff is the New York Times and internationally bestselling author of The Lotus War, The Illuminae Files, and The Nevernight Chronicle. Nevernight begins with a warning. The book, our narrator tells us, will show no restraint and our heroine is “a girl who was to murder as maestros are to music.” Living up to its promise, this is a gory and fantastical epic starring Mia, a trainee teenage assassin out for revenge against the dastardly empire that took away her parents. Jan Kristoff takes clear pleasure in describing the evocative universe of Itreya: there are breathless battles against extraordinary beasts, feline sidekicks and steamy romances.

Once in a lifetime kind of good
This book or series could very well be the opposite of sequacious. I am actively mourning having finished them, and if you are considering reading it, then I would one hundred percent say that you should. The characters are so well crafted and developed that I am shocked to my core that they aren’t real. Whilst I know Jay Kristoff didn’t write this book for me, some part of me is in disbelief that that wasn’t what occured, it was that good. This is ‘the book’. I don’t know whether it’s the books ferocious humour, or how Mia is probably the most (and I don’t use this word often for fear of being cringey, so that in itself says something) badass person to ever be written. All I know is that I am so glad I read this book. I will ‘never forget’ it.
Unexpected
This was hard to put down, at every turn of the page the story was unexpected, well crafted characters, wonderful read. This is an exceptional piece of writing and can’t wait to read no. 2
Intelligent writing at its best
Although the author gives warning that it’s not a pretty tale, I found nothing gratuitous about it at all, with every incident, twist and turn developing the characters. The absorbing progress of the antihero(ine) through fortune, misfortune and sheer hard work is a masterpiece of dry storytelling. There was humour to counterpoint the fatality as well.
The copious footnotes and explanations were a great addition, too. Looking forward to the next instalment!
