New Aesthetics in Contemporary Saxophone Music

This book discusses contemporary saxophone literature, tracing the various embodied aesthetics from their origins to their contemporary forms. After a brief account of the traditional repertoire, the author examines Anton Webern's Op. 22 Quartet and Edison Denisov's Sonate for Alto Saxophone, two pivotal works that lead into contemporary stylistic schools. Ibrahim outlines the defining qualities of these late 20th century movements, and explores the avant-garde contributions of Ornette Coleman, Daniel Kientzy, Steve Lacy, Evan Parker, and John Zorn.
