Notes from the Underground
Publisher Description
Published in 1864, Notes from Underground is considered the author's first masterpiece - the book in which he "became" Dostoevsky - and is seen as the source of all his later works. Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, whose acclaimed translations of The Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment have become the standard versions in English, now give us a superb new rendering of this early classic.
Customer Reviews
Interesting, and quite comical at times
I would say personally that the main story is quite witty, especially when he seems to fly into rages at random. The first half is a little bit difficult to follow so if you are interested in the plot more than the man’s ideas and values then you should probably skip to the second part.
The inner voice of the protagonist is marginally easier to understand after reading the first part and is quite similar to Raskolnikov’s character and this might be helpful for understanding crime and punishment (also by Dostoevsky)
An interesting read but you have to stay with it because it gradually becomes more enjoyable down the line
Brilliant quick read
Brief and brutal. My favourite work Dostoyevsky.
