The night before the biggest moment of her life, Amelia Salazar drives into the orange groves above Guardamar. She's twenty-three, the favourite to be crowned Miss Spain, and she's about to meet the man she's loved for seven years.
By morning she's dead.
Detective Ramos moved to Rojales for the quiet. Twenty-two years of Madrid homicide had left him with a bad temper, worse knees and a settled hope that nothing would ever happen to him again. Now he has a beautiful girl on a hillside, a missing boyfriend with two phones and a lot of cash, and a coast full of people who all say they knew exactly who did it.
The more he digs, the less it adds up. Everyone adored Amelia, and nobody can think of a reason. A phone has vanished, a producer's house has been torn apart for no reason anyone can name, and the one man everybody blames isn't answering his calls.
With the press howling, his boss panicking and the whole of Spain watching, Ramos gets help in the form of a laconic, six-foot-five American who steals his lunch and sees everything. Together they start to suspect that the truth is closer than anyone wants to believe.
Everyone knows who did it. That's the trouble.
A razor-sharp, darkly funny mystery of vanity, secrets and the lies we tell the people we love.
