Off to the Farm is the first book in the ‘Adventures in Bessiebuss’ series, written by a Reading Therapist, with 30 year’s teaching experience. These books are designed for struggling readers, and one glance inside will quickly convince you that these books are new, exciting and very different. They are written in pairs: a daytime and night-time story.
Parents and reluctant readers alike will find them appealing, because they are easy to read. A parent moves the story along, to provide an age appropriate story, reading from ordinary text. The shorter child’s reading mirrors the story, but the print is larger, colour coded and designed to make the sounds easier to recognise. Most importantly, only one or two new concepts are introduced in each book.
‘Off to the Farm’ continues the practice of three and four letter words (cvc, cvcc & ccvc) introduced in the Early Readers. It also introduces the sounds ‘sh’, ‘ch’, ‘th’ and ‘ng’ in the context of words and sentences, where they belong, and where they are easier for a child to recognise.
This first book introduces the Kid family, and the arrival of their amazing new caravan, Bessiebuss. It follows the children as they spend time together, alone, in Bessiebuss, and get to know some of the magic she holds, which becomes their secret.
It accompanies them, squabbling and laughing, on their long journey to the farm, where they spend their first holiday in Bessiebuss. And like the children it explores, the fun, freedom and excitement of being on a campsite, with its adjoining farm. ‘Worms in Our Sleeping Bags’ continues this story, into the night-time.
