Fantasy meets philosophy
Kowalewski has crafted a beautiful fantasy word in Enlightened, which is as charming as it is whimsical. Her talent for vivid description means that little is left to the imagination. Her universe evolves before your eyes as you turn each page, and Enlightened is difficult to put down.
The story is filled with well-worded advice and life lessons for the reader, learned through the eyes of protagonist, Harmony, an incredibly likeable character whose success you truly do hope for.
Enlightened is split between Harmony’s true life in Artopia and the many lives she lives on Earth. The split provides welcome breaks, and it is thrilling to see where each new life leads, and how it is all connected to love-interest Kaleb.
The romance feels a little rushed, and while this may be excused by the themes within the story, I find myself wishing there had been a longer development. Kowalewski overuses certain phrases within chapters, which unfortunately affects the immersion within these chapters. However, the relationship between the characters is wonderful, and healthy, and what should be written into more young adult books.
This is a gripping beginning to the series. Prepare yourself to seek the next instalment immediately after finishing Enlightened, because reading just this one book is not enough. Harmony and Kaleb’s story must be read to its conclusion. Truly, the interest Kowalewski generates is the mark of a wonderful author. I am excited to see where she goes next.
Must read, such an intriguing concept
Earth is not what you think it is, Earth is school. You live many lives before you learn all of it’s lessons.
A brilliant book with an interesting concept. It has so many moments that make you think about why humans are the way we are.
All of those things that don’t make sense in life, there’s an explanation for it and it’s fascinating. It’s spiritual and creative. I loved this book, I couldn’t put it down and I can’t wait to read the next instalment in the series.
