Publisher Description

Earth is conquered. The Shongairi have arrived in force, and humanity’s cities lie in radioactive ruins. In mere minutes, over half the human race has died.

Now Master Sergeant Stephen Buchevsky, who thought he was being rotated home from his latest tour in Afghanistan, finds himself instead prowling the back country of the Balkans, dodging alien patrols and trying to organize the scattered survivors without getting killed.

His chances look bleak. The aliens have definitely underestimated human tenacity - but no amount of heroism can endlessly hold off overwhelming force.

Then, emerging from the mountains and forests of Eastern Europe, new allies present themselves to the ragtag human resistance. Predators, creatures of the night, human in form but inhumanly strong. Long Enemies of humanity . . . until now. Because now is the time to defend Earth.

Go back to Baen Mr Weber - SPOILERS WITHIN

Mr Webers first non-series book published by his new relationship with Tor....and (In my opinion) his worst book ever!!

Weber is known for his well thought out cultures and his complex political machinations - both of which exist here and are well done. However the big failing of this book is that after 800+ pages of laying out the doom of the human race, showing the noble, but ultimately futile struggle they are engaged in to strike back - all of a sudden in the last 100 odd pages Vampires are here, they are invulnerable and butcher all the aliens, steal their ships and their industrial base, earth is saved..Yay!!! NOT.

It's almost like an hour long episode of a tv series where the writer suddenly realises that he has 10mins to go and needs to wrap the story up. No real lead up to this, the character who turns out to be the Vampire is seen a couple of times before but nothing really made of it then BAM and the Aliens are dead.

If this is the level of story crafting we can expect from Tor...PLEASE GO BACK TO BAEN BOOKS!!!
