How Arabs Should Respond to Netanyahu's Severe Blow to Mideast Peace Under Israel's hardline Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, peace negotiations with the Palestinians have not made any breakthrough despite sustained and energetic American attempts to salvage the faltering U.S.-sponsored Middle East peace process. Perhaps the best proof of the failure of Washington's diplomacy to bring peace to the region was last month's resignation of George Mitchell, U.S. Middle East envoy. Mitchell, a former U.S. senator, resigned after more than two largely fruitless years of trying to press Israel and the Palestinians into peace talks. His resignation came at a critical time for the Middle East, which is embroiled in turmoil and popular uprisings, and the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, which has been moribund since last September and is now further complicated by a reconciliation deal between the militant Islamic Hamas movement and the moderate Fatah group to share power.
