Touring Switzerland with Salemina, a dignified educator, and Francesca, a young woman travelling under their care, Penelope has spent her days among castles, historic houses, and memories of the famous. But when conscience reminds her that schools are opening back home, she persuades Salemina to trade a lovely drive and Swiss cakes for an educational pilgrimage to Yverdon, where Jean Henri Pestalozzi lived and taught. Getting there means a hurried train journey, a language muddle, and a quarrel over lemonade glasses—hardly the solemn lesson Penelope had planned.
