Petrov's Escape follows the son of a Russian dissident as Petrov seeks religion as a refuge after seeing his father killed trying to prevent him from being inducted into the Russian army. Forced to flee after killing a commissar and two troopers, he survives the Siberian wilderness, is maules by a bear and rescued by a Nanai family, trades furs and ivory to a Chinese smuggler, and assumes the identity of a Jewish look-alike in the Russian army to reach Ukraine. Recruited by the CIA, he joins the buzzard squadron to drop a low-level nuclear device on an isolated Siberian village to stop a tit-for-tat nuclear exchange, risking everything as his religious faith is challenged on every turn.
