If you think aphorisms are pretentious and stale, think again. George Murray’s second collection of “poetic essences” (his own, tongue-in-cheek term) contains 489 original musings, small truths, and utterances that are earnest, clever, often funny, and wise without being aloof. Murray’s observations manage to be both simple and sublime, whether he’s considering friendship, Speedos, or, naturally, poetry. Take this brilliant observation: “Life is to poetry as a random number generator is to math: it screws everything up until it accidentally makes everything right.”
