The Missing Children Case Files: Case 1
‘Mind-blowingly addictive!’ Samantha Lee Howe, USA Today-bestselling author of The Stranger in Our Bed
Some secrets are too big to bury…
Investigative journalist Emma Hunter never thought she’d be a bestselling author. Especially not for a blistering exposé of the brutal horrors committed at an orphanage.
Some secrets breed in the dark…
All she wants is to return home to the anchoring salt air and solitude of Weymouth where questions still fester unanswered and a twenty-year-old secret binds her to the beach.
And some of them always escape…
But then she finds herself sucked into the chaos of another cold case and soon realises the search for the missing girl will not only unearth the rot ravaging the safety of children across the south of England, but could even solve the mystery that has tortured her since she was seven years old…
Murder, She Wrote meets The Fall… Ransomed marks the beginning of a nerve-shredding new crime series of feral reckonings and found family in the face of harrowing inhumanity, perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Ann Cleeves, and J M Dalgliesh.

Interesting
I wasn’t sure about the subject matter but it is well done and an interesting read. There are parts where I wish things were less or toned down, ie, facial expressions and what the characters were doing as they talked, which was too much in places. I don’t like repetitive things like the amount of time a characters eyes narrowed or that they had a dry throat or cleared their throat before speaking. It’s unnecessary and there are alternative things that could be said.
However they are minor gripes with a story that is well worthwhile and one that builds to good conclusion and makes you want to read the second in the series. The cliff hanger that is end of book 1 continues in book 2 and it is this attention to detail and continuing storyline that makes the second book a must read.
I almost feel that the first book was an introduction to the characters and appetiser to what follows and that the tension and real meat of the series will ramp up continuously in books two to six. Reading this authors previous work “Then he was gone” and other stories by Stephen Edger mean it will end up as real fire cracker.
However this so much cleverer than it first appears. M A Hunter is actually short for Emma Hunter and these set of books are actually her diaries of a dual time line that show both the victims storylines and her own investigations that solve the mysteries. They are then published by her publishing company and and we are updated to their success in the following books in the series. The actual author of this series may of been too clever for his own good here. This is because there is a a fictitious book called monsters under the bed within the series and if Harper Collins has any sense they will make him write it as a bonus book to the 6 part series.
“Then he was gone” is one of my favourite books of all time and I can’t recommend it highly enough. If you want something that you will enjoy and be on the edge of your seat with, then read it. It should either be a film or an itv series, because “Then he is gone” is a corker!!!
