Exciting and intelligent fiction
Plenty of fast action and plot twists. The story is surprisingly upbeat considering it’s set in a near future dystopia with chilling similarities to the one we are currently in.
The main characters are two very different women; Jac, a trained medic has been raised within principles of non-violence even while taking incredible risks to protect her patients. And Bel, a born fighter, making a last minute decision to turn away from the path of the terrorist to join the Resistance––but still wrestling to keep her hunger for bloody revenge under control. The reader knows these two will eventually meet––but how and when remains a mystery until the last pages.
Then there is Raine, the Resistance leader who has the responsibility for the bigger picture and the long-term success of the struggle against a despotic regime. A brilliant depiction of the precarious balance between idealism, wisdom and serious burnout.
A refreshing change to find a story with real plot and character depth instead of a main character who simply goes around wreaking havoc and slaughter on every other page.
The series looks like it’s going to be a long campaign before they succeed, with each book being another episode along the way. It means character development is going to be slow-burn but promises to be all the more interesting and nuanced for that. I will probably switch to the trilogies to make binge-reading easier!
