Highly recommend this for anyone with even a passing interest in this fascinating group of marine animals. No prior knowledge of marine biology is presumed and the clear photographs are of huge benefit for accurate identification.
Although specifically targeted for Scottish waters, many of the species are to be found throughout the North Atlantic making this book a valuable resource for a wider geographical area.
The presentation is clear and methodical, with all the key features of each animal detailed. Navigation is easy and intuitive, and clickable links to explore individual species online are provided for those keen to dig deeper. Known food sources are also given to assist in finding and identifying species.
The author has managed to avoid making the subject matter too dry or academic, and has achieved the neat trick of keeping the book light and engaging without losing the important facts. Enough information is given without 'overload'. In addition the digital format allows updates to be easily provided in future as the taxonomy changes and new species are identified, meaning readers never have to buy new editions to stay right up to date.
No hesitation in giving 5 stars.
