Publisher Description

An unsettling, fascinating journey into the mind and soul of a woman who fights passionately to break the chains of an abusive childhood and to overcome the effects of an incestuous attack. A book of struggle that becomes a song of liberation. Barbara Rogers shares in her book her journey of liberation and her experience of changing her life through therapy. A moving sequence of poems takes the reader on a journey of making the unconscious conscious; of becoming aware of the true feelings and needs of a human being, who was not allowed to have them or be aware of them; of changing a life to embrace and make come true the values that could not exist in the dark world where the writer came from. The author has given voice to the childhood pain that usually does not dare to venture outside of the therapist’s office.

From the Author

My book is the result of overcoming tremendous fears. These screams were not only forbidden by my parents, but there also was no one around me who wanted to hear them, much less do something about them. Until I entered therapy at the age of thirty two, my unconscious and my feelings were buried, gone underground. I had never remembered a dream — but when I was about three months into therapy, I recalled my first, unforgettable dream. It was a tremendous struggle to face my past. But with time, my feelings and needs came alive and helped me confront my present life and what I needed to change. It is my hope that my book helps to enhance the awareness of the kind of feelings, agonies and destructiveness, which emotional, physical, and sexual violence imprint into children. My aspiration for my book and work is to support others to listen to their own screams and take them seriously. I want to encourage therapists to face their own past, and to accompany their clients on that same journey not only with compassion and courage, but also with the knowledge and conviction that they are supporting mankind in one of the most important endeavors of our time — to confront and change the damage which cruel child rearing practices have on our minds, souls and lives.
