Publisher Description

Some destinies are chosen. Olli's was waiting in the shadows.

When sixteen-year-old Olli moves to sleepy Horizon Creek, she expects boredom—not a shadowy presence in the woods or a burst of magic that changes everything.

Suddenly, she's a Shield: protector of the powerful, secretive Gates family. But her new role comes with dangerous questions—about her father's death, the magic awakening inside her, and the Dowager who will do anything to claim a Shield of her own.

Then there's Brend, the maddening boy who seems to know more than he says, and whose secrets may be the key to it all.

As ancient forces stir, Olli must uncover the truth about her past and find the strength to face what's coming—before the darkness claims her.

Shield and the Shadow is the first book in The Horizon Cycle, a dark, magical YA fantasy full of secrets, slow-burn romance, and reluctant heroes.

Excellent

The heroine returns to her roots in the hope of finding a place to truly belong. Mysteries build around her and within her as she struggles to understand the incomprehensible, as well as falling in love. Together they are caught up in impossible demands as they strive to accept their new challenges. An excellent read.

Without a doubt a great new series

I don't like leaving spoilers. The author A.M.Yates has managed to transcribe her imagination into the written word really well in "Shield and Shadow" and left us with a great cliffhanger that has left me wanting more. The story is well defined so you always know where you are in the book and the plots are easy to see in the minds eye. There was a couple of times I felt like please get on with it, but afterwards I realised these situations was part of the building blocks of the story, and probably just my impatience to know what was coming next. The story was told mainly in the first person which is what I prefer as a reader. The main character I felt was Oli and the other characters were built up around her. I feel there could be a lot more to come from these, as we was only given tidbits about them as and when the story required them. Emotions I feel are hard to capture in the written word, like texting, the words are there but lack emotion. However the author managed to capture them really well, and I felt like I was engaged and invested very quickly in the story. Beware though once you start, you can't put it down. I would definitely recommend this book, and look forward to seeing what happens next
