Worth the effort
Even as a 1950’s council-estate lad, my comic-reading exposed me to a caricature of boarding-school culture and vocabulary that gave me access to this superb collection of (related) stories. I fear that modern readers may find it less accessible, but I urge them to try - Kipling is unsurpassed in bringing the essence of Victorian society and culture to life. Brutal it may have been, but so rich!
