Publisher Description
An all-new novel based upon the explosive Star Trek TV series!
Aboard the Starship Shenzhou, Lieutenant Michael Burnham, a human woman raised and educated among Vulcans, is promoted to acting first officer. But if she wants to keep the job, she must prove to Captain Philippa Georgiou that she deserves to have it.
She gets her chance when the Shenzhou must protect a Federation colony that is under attack by an ancient alien vessel that has surfaced from the deepest fathoms of the planet’s dark, uncharted sea.
As the menace from this mysterious vessel grows stronger, Starfleet declares the colony expendable in the name of halting the threat. To save thousands of innocent lives, Burnham must infiltrate the alien ship. But to do so, she needs to face the truth of her troubled past, and seek the aid of a man she has tried to avoid her entire life—until now.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Certain Star Trek fans have been clamouring for this rapturous tale to be adapted for the screen, and it’s easy to see way. Veteran science-fiction writer David Mack has proved an incredibly steady custodian of the much-loved Discovery characters, and here he places Lieutenant Michael Burnham centre-stage. An inspirational human that only knows Vulcan life who receives a wholly deserved and pressurised promotion to first officer, she’s a fascinating lead here. There’s a tumultuous back story to explore, a vulnerable colony to protect and a thrilling climax.

I want the movie!
WOW. This would serve as a great introduction to Discovery for those who are TOS literate. A decent sci-fi narrative that stands alone but the real fun is imagining the Discovery chracters working in tandem with Pike's enterprise. The greatest thrill is in the parts dedicated to Spock and Burnham but side characters like Una (Majel Barret's character in the original pilot) and Saru are well drawn and equally satisfying. My only regret is that the scenes dedicated to Spock and Burnham are confined to this book. I highly recommend to fans of Star Trek old and new. An excellent first novel for Star Trek Discovery.
