A great new crime novel
I really enjoyed reading Stolen Hours. This is more than just crime fiction. It’s an intricate tale of deception told with an original voice. It’s a novel about a young woman growing up the hard way.
Lotty Lin is a great central character: sexy and strong, high-minded and moral, but with a mean streak that puts her and others in danger. Her backstory in Macau is intriguing, with a tragic reveal towards the end. But more pressingly, this young Chinese detective has the deaths of an Asian mother and child to figure out, and two hours of her missing memory that hold a clue.
All this happens on the south coast of England, in Brighton ‘made strange’ in the way that Ballard did with Estrella de Mar in Cocaine Nights. The near future as a nightmarish vision of today. Stolen Nights is also clearly a homage to Graham Greene and Brighton Rock. It reminded me of the Ealing comedies in places, but dark … very dark.
