The Cloud Hands Edition of The Art of War attempts to bridge the gap between the very scholarly and at times obscure translations of this text and the popular translations which try to make the entire text accessible, contemporary and usable but at the price of eliminating intrinsic differences between our Western view of the world and the world as seen through the lens of this classical Chinese text. To the non-academic the first results in a difficult and unmanageable work and the second leaves us with a homogenized version that does not allow us to attempt to cross this cultural chasm and to make the wisdom of this text accessible to those of us in the West.
