Susan Lenox

“The child’s dead,” Nora says—but Dr. Stevens refuses to let a verdict, or a roomful of stifling summer air, have the last word. He swings the tiny body through the air until a cry breaks the silence: life, furious and unmistakable.

In Sutherland, an Indiana town on the Ohio, a newborn girl survives the death of her mother, Lorella Lenox. But her aunt, Fanny Warham, hears that the baby is a girl and starts up in alarm; the child’s birth carries a shame the adults around her already understand. Named Susan, she enters a world quick to judge her before she can speak, and the first struggle for her life is only the beginning. What can Susan make of a life others have already marked as disgrace?
