The Betrothed

The Betrothed by Alessandro Manzoni is a novel set in Northern Italy under oppressive Spanish rule in the 17th century.  The tale is centered around a young couple, Renzo and Lucia, who are prevented from marrying by the jealous Don Rodrigo. With Rodrigo attempting to court Lucia, the couple leaves the area and deals with a set of challenges.
