This novel tells of a tragic love affair between young Lucy Ashton and her family's enemy Edgar Ravenswood. Edgar's father was deprived of the title for supporting the dismissed King. Lucy's father, Sir William Ashton, then bought the Ravenswood estate. Edgar hates Sir William for this confiscation of his family's heritage, but when he meets Lucy, he instantly falls in love with her, and discards his plans for vengeance. Lucy's mother, Lady Ashton, however, is determined to end the happy relationship between Edgar and Lucy.
