APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Matt Haig’s Inside Story: “[Writing The Comfort Book] was very accidental. I have been writing little scraps of things to comfort myself for a long time, and collecting my favourite quotes from writers and philosophers. Then during lockdown, right after writing The Midnight Library, I thought I would put them all in one place, for anyone who wanted some comfort. Comfort, for me, doesn’t mean denying the bad stuff, but coming to terms with it—face it and live well despite it. So as well as comfort, a sense of acceptance and a reframing of uncertainty as a good thing—that is what I was aiming for.
“When I was really ill I used to read books of quotations. Like a kind of lucky dip, never knowing what you are going to get. I wanted it to have the same feel but, at the same time, it also has a loose kind of structure. Originally it was going to be based around the four elements—fire, water, earth, air—to highlight the theme of connection. It has a flow to it I’d say, more than a formal structure, if that makes sense. It was calming, possibly the most pleasurable writing experience ever. Because of the theme but also because of the relaxed structure. It was really a kind of self-therapy that helped get me through the grimness of 2020.”

Comforting
The Comfort Book by Matt Haig
I think the title says it all. I’ve read this book along side other books that I’ve been reading. It’s a dip in and out kind of book. You can open it at any page and will find inspiring, comforting, kind and grounding words. I felt like this book touched on deep concepts or profound moments in history, art, culture or in someone’s life which is thought provoking for the reader should they want to read more. For me this was the story of or Buddhist teaching Haig mentions - I will now seek these out to read.
If you have never read a self help book and don’t want something too heavy or something you can pick up at anytime this is the book for you.
Beautiful book
A bought this book from the book store and as I began reading, felt completely in love with it. I didn’t want it to end but it did and it made me sad. Planning on reading it again.
A comforting read before bed
Like an uplifting chant I chose to read before bed and it settled my mind for more positive dreaming. The author is open about his own struggles and despair at living with depression which resonated with me and made me feel less alone in my own mental health battles. Have already recommended this book and will no doubt do again.
