THE CRYSTAL CASKET

Thomas Crane was an American scholar and writer, mostly known as a collector and publisher of folk-tales and legends. 

 “The Crystal Casket” is a legend, included in the “Italian Popular Tales” collection. The narration is about one widower who has a daughter. Her school teacher, seeing that the child has no mother, falls in love with the father, and every day she saying to the girl: "Ask your father if he would like me for a wife." Finally, one evening the man agrees to come to the school-mistress' house, and after this visit they get married. Poor girl! How bitterly she will have to repent having found a stepmother so ungrateful and cruel to her!
