E. T. A. Hoffmann was a German Romantic author of fantasy and horror, composer, music critic, draftsman and caricaturist, who is considered as one of the major authors of the Romantic movement. 'The Devil's Elixirs' is a novel by Hoffman initially published in 1815 and represents an author's adaptation of the novel 'The Monk' by Matthew Gregory Lewis. The plot goes around a Capuchin monk that gets tempted by the Devil.
