"You know, I've been hearing some stories about you," Greer says.
"What do you mean?"
"That you're a bit of a liar."

It is 1951 and Lois Saunders arrives at the Golden Yarrow divorce ranch in Nevada, fleeing her suffocating marriage. Here women from different backgrounds live together for the six weeks it will take to earn their freedom, spending their days riding horses and their nights flirting with cowboys. It's as wild and fun as Lois's former home was prim and stifling, but it isn't until Greer Lang arrives that her world truly cracks open . . .

Gorgeous, beguiling, and outspoken, Greer is unlike anyone Lois has ever met - and she sees something in Lois that no one else ever has. Soon, under her influence, Lois begins to push against the limits that have always restrained her.

But how much can Lois really trust her new friend? And how far will she go to forge her independence, on her own terms?

Personal and unafraid

Rarely debut novels are truly original. Nobody could confuse this book. It says it all without any fear. Here there is a story of women and their world which are never just one entity. Each of them plays the strength and the weakness of their personality. There are some very entertaining scenes like the rodeo one or the various ones set in places where cocktails are not just a drink but a sort of rite . I liked the use of the language and the direct approach. A portrait of real women not just characters.

Fantastically eerie

I really enjoyed the world building in this book. It added to the eerie suspense and went well with the pacing of the book.
I found myself intrigued by the different characters, striving for independence in a world that determined their futures. The book did make me ponder on how far we had come in terms of societal expectations for women and attitudes toward women who choose divorce.

A slow grower but by the end I loved it.

At first I enjoyed the historical interest but wasn’t captivated by the characters. They revealed themselves slowly and by the end I was routing for the heroine to set herself free. The ending is perfect.
