The Dreaming Suburb
This is a fantastic story. It begins as many of Delderfield's books do, with a main character returning from a war. It then goes onto describe the social changes that take place in England between the 1st and 2nd World Wars through the eyes of the characters. The scope of the story is brilliant and well told with plenty of moving moments. I found that I invested emotions with the characters some I wanted to succeed whilst others I would have preferred to have not. I think that to a younger reader there may be some conflict in which the female characters are portrayed but Delderfield was a writer of his time. What I will say is that I did not find the dialogue dated or stilted. The only thing that I found to criticise is the amount of spelling and grammatical errors there were throughout the book. If ebooks are to be promoted then the standards must be improved. I look forward to more books that were originally published before the digital age seeing their way into a new format and thereby hopefully, finding new readers (or even encouraging older readers to embrace a new format).
