DID HE, OR DIDN'T HE?
Olivia Randall is one of New York City's best criminal defence lawyers. When she gets a phone call informing her that her former fiancée has been arrested for a triple homicide there is no doubt in her mind as to his innocence. The only question is who would go to such great lengths to frame him - and why?
For Olivia, representing Jack is a way to make up for past regrets, and the hurt she caused him, but as the evidence against him mounts, she is forced to confront her doubts.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
As meet-cutes go, "widower spotting woman in last night’s dress reading his favourite novel on a morning run by the Hudson River" seems like a promising one. But this is a gripping meet-dark instead. The beautiful stranger, found via an internet shout-out, pulls Jack into a tangled web of deceit—framing him for triple murder, neatly linked to the tragic death of his own wife three years prior. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you get on with your exes) Jack’s former flame Olivia is a top defence attorney. But can she unfurl the truth? And did she know Jack as well as she thought she did?
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Near the start of bestseller Burke's gripping standalone, New York City DA Olivia Randall receives a desperate phone call from the school-age daughter of her ex-fianc , Jack Harris, whose wife, Molly, was killed in a mass shooting three years earlier at Manhattan's Penn Station. Jack has now been implicated in a triple murder one of the victims was partly responsible for Molly's death and his only defense is his flimsy claim that at the time he had an assignation with a mysterious woman he first saw drinking champagne and reading a book on a Hudson River pier. As Olivia sets out to clear his name, she begins to wonder whether Jack is not the devoted, kind, and decent man she remembers. Internally conflicted but outwardly brash, Olivia makes an appealingly bold protagonist, and while the final twist may disappoint some readers, Burke (If I Were You) keeps the suspense high throughout, prying open mysteries of relationships and perception.
Customer Reviews
an interesting read
this is overall a good book and a very interesting read, and it keeps you guessing as new bits of evidence are discovered. I wouldn't want this lady as a lawyer though. She's way to Falmouth, drowns her sorrows in alcohol, and just does not seem like the type of responsible defense attorney I would want if it were me. Overall though it was enjoyable and entertaining.
Addictive
Very difficult to put this book down
A enjoyable read!
As far as murder mysteries go, I guessed the ending mid way through. However it was still an enjoyable read nonetheless! Really good read and I will check out her others
