Once you're in the family, you're in it for life...
Devastatingly powerful, THE FAMILY by the 'undisputed queen of crime writing' (Guardian) and Sunday Times No.1 bestseller Martina Cole reaches the darkest corners of family life. Philip Murphy expects loyalty from their nearest and dearest - for better or for worse...
Family is everything for the Murphy clan. Philip runs his business empire with the help of his brother, and dotes on his two sons who will, one day, take over.
His wife Christine is his perfect match. She'd always dreamed of a big happy family and, when she married into the Murphys, she thought she'd found one. But when that illusion is shattered, she's already in too deep.
The Murphys are dangerous and Christine can't unsee the horrors she has now been forced to open her eyes to. But nor can she escape them.

APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Martina Cole’s experiences growing up in an Essex council estate feed into her gritty crime novels, which are as much about tenacious individuals and close-knit families as they are about gangsters and brutality. The Family is a rapid-fire story built around the relationship between fallen good girl Christine Booth and Phillip Murphy, the charismatic son of a scrappy clan with criminal ties. Bite-size chapters and hair-raising scenes ensure you won’t put down this book until you find out how things shake out for this explosive group.
Classic Cole. Builds characters from the beginning letting you think that your part of the family. Read most of hers now and despite the background being similar in most, I have yet not thoroughly enjoyed one of her books!
Far too much padding
Overall I enjoyed this but there was an awful lot of padding and labouring of plot points and description of character flaws. The reader quickly picks up what kind of character Phillip is (for example) and does not still need it rehashing and retelling even at the end of the story. We know already!
