Publisher Description

As he did in WHO NOT HOW, Dr. Benjamin Hardy shares one of Dan Sullivan’s simple yet profound teachings that until now has been known only to his Strategic Coach clients: unsuccessful people focus on “The Gap,” but successful people focus on “The Gain.”

"[T]his one simple concept is a masterclass on positive psychology, healthy relationships, mental well-being, and high-performance. Everything that psychologists know about how to create a high-functioning and successful person can be achieved using The GAP and the GAIN."- Dr. Benjamin Hardy

Most people, especially highly ambitious people, are unhappy because of how they measure their progress. We all have an "ideal," a moving target that is always out of reach. When we measure ourselves against that ideal, we're in "the GAP." However, when we measure ourselves against our previous selves, we're in "the GAIN."

That is where the GAP and the GAIN concept comes in. It was developed by legendary entrepreneur coach Dan Sullivan and is based on his work with tens of thousands of successful entrepreneurs. When Dan's coaching clients periodically take stock of all that they've accomplished-both personally and professionally-they are often shocked at how much they have actually achieved. They weren't able to appreciate their progress because no matter how much they were getting done, they were usually measuring themselves against their ideals or goals.

In this book you will learn that measuring your current self vs. your former self has enormous psychological benefits. And that's really the key to this deceptively simple yet multi-layered concept that will have you feeling good, feeling grateful, and feeling like you are making progress even when times are tough, which will in turn bolster motivation, confidence, and future success.

If you're finding that happiness eludes you no matter how much you've achieved, then learning this easy mindset shift will set you on a life-changing path to greater fulfillment and success.

Great bones...

A knowledge compound book club read:

I groaned when someone suggested this and was disappointed that I got voted higher than the book I wanted to read, but actually I'm really glad we read it. I know, I rated it 2, hear me out.

What's wrong with the book?
A LOT.
- The NLP repetitive GAP GAIN capitalisation throughout the book is grating. Really grating. Apparently they just say gap and gain normally in the audiobook, but in print it was horrible to read.
- The whole 'I only deal with millionaires so aren't you lucky I could be bothered to get a minion to write this book for you' attitude did not inspire feelings of gratitude in me.
- the way they are trying to say they invented positive thinking, while simultaneously providing you with many many pages of literature/studies where they got the ideas from.
- the annoying quotes in the middle of chapters. And then a pdf of the annoying quotes!!! Not the journal prompts or something useful.
- I found the language of the examples and the explanations and even the science behind why it works to be written... somehow, annoyingly? I agree with what he's saying but I don't know if it was too long, or phrased badly or what but when I recommend this book I have to caveat a lot.
- it's a tiny book. Which could have been better if it was even shorter. One review on Goodreads said 'it could have been a tweet' and that is a big bit of its problem. The concept is so simple, that all this extra fluff that they've added to justify calling it a book and getting the £8 for it, ruins it a bit.

What was good about it;
- the gap and the gain is really simple language that is easy to explain to a child. Much easier than trying to explain 'lack mentality' or 'fixed vs growth mindset' so that's a cool tool in itself.
- the tool to get into 'the gain' is a mixture of gratitude, positive thinking, journaling and setting goals/tracking your progress. On their own each of these things could be beneficial, together they are powerful.
- The nightly journal entry with gratitude, wins and priorities are great and I honestly think that could help anyone on a journey to a more positive life.
- in fact the exercises and tools given are all useful, it's just a shame they are coated in so much fluff and sales pitches for other books.

All in all... great idea badly executed. At least I only paid £8 and not the thousands people pay to be coached by the guy who couldn't be bothered to write the book.

If it helps you great! Really really pleased for you and good luck on your journey into your best life. If you've read a few self awareness/business books then you probably already have heard most of the ideas in here.

If you didn't do the prompts. Go back and do them properly. No point in schlepping through this book if you're not gonna do the bare minimum of self reflection. Good luck, big love, and thanks for reading the review.
