The Good Soldier
A great book, interestingly written in a style to keep your wits about you.
Marred slightly by incorrect Chapter separation.
A towering piece of work
I find it astonishing that this novel, and Ford Madox Ford along with it, are not better known. The apparently effortless way in which he presents memory and loss, and the intertwining of relationships, is quite spellbinding. His prose is quiet, limpid, enveloping. As it happens, I read Proust from end to end earlier this year and marvelled at how that work can be praised quite as much as it is. reading The Good Soldier I would say Proust is just verbose, Ford shows how a novel of memory and recollection ought to be written. Genius!
