This book is beautifully and eloquently written and the writer knows how to truly create a suspenseful scene and how to draw in the reader. She creates beautiful images and dark and scary tombs with her words. However, I downloaded this book after seeing it on a list of the 50 scariest books of all time. I was under the impression that this was going to be a good old fashioned haunted house story and I would be truly glued to the pages. To an extent this is true and I quickly ploughed through this novel and felt gripped and thrilled, but the writer creates a scene in which you're anticipating what happens next, and nothing happens next...
It did not scare me and this was rather disappointing. Therefore the rating is more for the literary expertise of the writer rather than the actual content of the book

Utter rubbish
I asked for a top 10 horror and this rubbish was in the top 3. Poorly written. And it did not get any better towards the end. Thank god The film The Haunting re-wrote most of it to make a half decent film out of it.
