We are at war. The interdimensional invasion brought us unimaginable suffering, but it also awoke talents slumbering deep within us, a means to repel and destroy our enemy. Every day new gates open, leading to breaches filled with monsters and valuable resources. If you are a Talent, your country needs you. The world needs you. Be the hero you were born to be.

Adaline is a Talent. Ten years ago, she had a happy marriage and a job she loved. The invasion shattered both. Now she works for the government, searching the breaches for magic metals and medicine to help Earth repel an interdimensional enemy. Two kids, one cat, bills, benefits, mortgage and school tuition...Risking her life became routine.

She had gone into the dimensional gates hundreds of times. She was always well protected. This time everything goes wrong. Now Ada is trapped in the labyrinth of alien caves unlike any other. Her only companion is a scared German Shepherd named Bear. Together they must uncover the breach's secrets and escape, because Ada promised her children that she will come home.

The future of humanity depends on it.

I want more!

I found this book a bit slow to start but once I got about 15-20% of the way in, I was hooked. By the time I got to the end I was wishing the series was completed so I didn’t have to leave the world so soon.

Ilona Andrew’s excellent once again in their world building and storytelling. Another gripping story full of action, emotion, and a surprise or two for those familiar with their other works.

Ada is a great leading character and it’s honestly so nice to see a strong middle aged woman fighting her own battles, using her intelligence and compassion to make it through. I’m so used to main characters being in their early 20’s and it’s just a delight to read about someone closer to my own age, someone I can relate to more. I can’t wait to read more about her, Bear, and Elias’s adventures in the breach.

Impossible to put down!

Set on a familiar earth, but one in which inter dimensional breaches have been appearing for a decade. Teams of people with talents - changes in people that started to arise when the interdimensional gates showed up - go in to the breaches to find and destroy anchors holding open the gate, before monsters from other worlds emerge.
The book follows a team sent into a breach and is mostly set in the breach, with the 40-year old single mother heroine and the team dog battling to stay alive when the rest of the team are killed, and we follow their journey through the breach trying to get back to the gate to earth.
Meanwhile the politics and culture of our planet - after 10-years of defending earth from dangerous gates - is explored, through the actions of the senior people in the guild of Talented people, who were in charge of closing the breach, and who think they’ve lost almost their whole team.
I don’t want to give any spoilers away but this is a fantastic read.
An amazing world, that’s truly unique, is created in this story. The heroine, her talents, her kids, the dog and the set up of the world are all gripping. Story charges along. I sat up half the night because I had to finish it and now I can’t wait to read what happens next.
