Publisher Description
Kevin Lewis grew up on a council estate in South London. Beaten and starved by his parents, ignored by the social services and bullied at school, he was offered a chance to escape this nightmare world and was put into care. Despite his best efforts to make things work out, his life spiralled out of control. At the age of 17 he became caught up in the criminal underworld of London, where he was known as 'The Kid'. From the violent anger he suffered at the hands of his mother and father, to the continuous torments at school; from the way in which he coped with rejection from people he trusted, to suffering from bulimia and a wish to take his own life, Kevin succeeded in making a better life for himself. This is his story ..

The kid
Thoroughly enjoyed reading, understand on so many levels , a true inspiration xx
The Kid
I thoroughly enjoyed this book , it makes you realise that you are dealt the hand of cards you get and you have to stand up and be proud to be just YOU ! No matter what the circumstances may be, or what life throws at you. It makes you feel courageous, brave and only human. It also makes you reflect on your own life and how you can make a change or difference no matter what. Fantastic read , would highly recommend it.
Brilliant!
I haven't read a book from cover to cover for it must be at least 15 years, I'd like to say its because I'm too busy but more truthfully it's because I just couldn't be bothered.
But having read 'The Kid' in the space of 2 evenings after having seen the film adaptation of it I can truthfully say the time spent reading it was time well spent.
I'd defy anyone at some point not to have a tear in their eye after having read this book, there are points in this book where what happened to Kevin as a child seems like fiction, maybe that's because I wanted it to be and I didn't want this story to be a true one of how he and his siblings were let down by the social services and most unforgivably his parents.
But in the end this book is inspiring it's a testament to a guy who was dealt a crappy hand in life and who did go into a life of crime because he saw no other way, but it's also a story of a man who kept getting knocked down by life but who stubbornly kept dusting himself down and getting back up on his feet. And most importantly a guy who in the end triumphed over it all.
Well done Kevin, well done indeed.
