But when Fran wakes one night to find Nathan gone, she makes a devastating discovery. As questions about her husband and her relationships start to mount, Fran's life begins to spiral out of control.
What is she hiding from the police about her marriage, and does she really know the man she shared her bed with?
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Tense, taut and full of sharp twists and turns, this domestic thriller is a gripping labyrinth. Fran Hall lives in a bleak farmhouse with two exhausting small children, a controlling husband and zero friends. When her husband Nathan’s body is found in their garden, fingers quickly point towards Fran, while the murky mysteries within Nathan’s life suddenly reveal themselves. We loved Christobel Kent’s cool and collected writing style—it’s perfect for building tension to the almost breaking point.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
At the start of this engrossing psychological thriller set in rural England from Kent (The Crooked House), Fran Hall awakes early one winter morning to discover that her husband, Nathan, is missing from their bed. A search of their dilapidated farmhouse reveals nothing but the Halls' two young children. The door is unlocked and the mat is muddy, so Fran heads outside, where she finds Nathan's bloody corpse in a drainage ditch. As the murder investigation progresses, the police become increasingly suspicious of Fran. She starts to do some digging of her own, and it's not long before Fran realizes that she was married to a stranger. Skillfully integrated flashbacks permit both Fran and the reader to conduct a marital postmortem, and the harsh weather and isolated locale help amplify the tale's inherent tension. The plot features some clever twists, and though Kent doesn't fully earn her ending, she's crafted an emotionally charged mystery that will keep readers guessing until the final chapter.
Customer Reviews
Strange book
I found it an odd read, confusing and I often lost interest after a chapter or two so it took me a while to get through. I didn't hate it, I felt compelled to finish it so it must have it's good points. No such luck if you're looking for a dramatic ending though.
Excellent
Page turner. Keeps you guessing until the very end. Highly recommended.
The Loving Husband
I enjoyed this book but I agree with the other reviews. The choppy writing was quite confusing and I had to go back and re-read a couple of times. It had potential to be a great story but the way it was written just wasn't for me.
