Publisher Description

Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. Obsessed with the fantasy novels he read as a child, he finds the real world just doesn't compare.

Then one day it happens: he stumbles unexpectedly into a hidden world and is invited to join a very exclusive college, where he will learn the secrets of magic.

But something is still missing.

And now Quentin will do anything to find what he's always been looking for.

Editing aside, good book.

Great Magic Realism Book!!

I love magic realism and really enjoyed this book. I've always been a big fan of Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia so this was a great combination for the older years. The characters weren't particularly likeable...especially Quentin, however Grossman made it easy to understand and relate to him. I'm just about to buy the next one :)

Derivative misogynist pap

The derivative premise aside, it was an intriguing concept.
However I found the Quentin Coldwater shallow and uninspiring.
I found the thinly sketched characters difficult to read, and when I realised how disposable the female love interests were in the pursuit of Quentin's "next-thing, next-thing..." for lack of a better word "plot-arc" were I did not read the next book.
