At the age of thirty, Amy Liptrot finds herself washed up back home on Orkney. Standing unstable on the island, she tries to come to terms with the addiction that has swallowed the last decade of her life. As she spends her mornings swimming in the bracingly cold sea, her days tracking Orkney's wildlife, and her nights searching the sky for the Merry Dancers, Amy discovers how the wild can restore life and renew hope.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
We were completely floored by Amy Liptrot’s transcendent memoir of alcoholism. The Outrun captures the stark beauty of the Orkney islands where Liptrot grew up and the sordid chaos of her unfulfilled desires and diseased drinking. An astonishing tribute to the natural world’s curative powers—and the joy and terror of human existence—it’s likely to make you miss your bus stop and be flooded with wanderlust.

Orkney sounds magical
Amazing creation can’t wait to see the film
Great
At first I thought it came across a little self indulgent. Although perhaps as it was a little close to home for me as someone who’d had a not too dissimilar time in London! But I felt like it really got going on the return to Orkney. I enjoyed reading about the authors experiences and feel like I learnt a lot too. I identified with the ‘journey’ taken and, whilst not sober myself, the wonder and joy that opens up when you embark on adventures that don’t revolve around drinks and nightlife! Definitely recommend.
