Ghosts… haunted room… deaths… disappearings…
It is a house where the living are not the only present. There is a room in which spirits dwell. But, is this true, or just a belief?
The narrator of the story is a person who had never seen a ghost and doesn’t believe in such things. At the beginning, we see him talking to creepy, elderly people telling them that he wants to enter into the haunted room. The people warn them not to do that, whatever he intends to do, because things will end up badly, especially because it is the “night of all nights”.
The house where the narrator and the other people are in, is the Lorraine Castle, abandoned after the leaving of her ladyship. In this castle happened a lot of bad things and many people have died.
But, beside all these things, the narrator is still determined to spend a night in the haunted, red room.
When he enters the room, he sees a large, dark room full of black and red furnishings. He finds several candles and a fireplace which he lights up. When the room is illuminated, the narrator sets up a chair and a table by the fireplace, to make the room more suitable and less disturbing. But, there are still some shadows at the end of the room that look like living things. In order to illuminate the room even more, he takes ten candles from the hallway and places them around the room.
Now, everything seems nice and the room looks great… Well, until sometime after midnight…
The candle at the end of the room is suddenly extinguished and the narrator gets up in order to relight it with matches. But then, two candles behind him also extinguish. What is happening?
Will he survive the night? Or, he will share the same destiny as those before him?
