Publisher Description
From the world of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials - now a major critically acclaimed BBC series.
She had asked: What is he? A friend or an enemy?
The alethiometer answered: He is a murderer.
When she saw the answer, she relaxed at once.
Lyra finds herself in a shimmering, haunted otherworld – Cittàgazze, where soul-eating Spectres stalk the streets and wingbeats of distant angels sound against the sky.
But she is not without allies: twelve-year-old Will Parry, fleeing for his life after taking another's, has also stumbled into this strange new realm.
On a perilous journey from world to world, Lyra and Will uncover a deadly secret: an object of extraordinary and devastating power.
And with every step, they move closer to an even greater threat – and the shattering truth of their own destiny.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy now appears in sophisticated trade paperback editions, each title embossed within a runic emblem of antiqued gold. The backdrop of The Golden Compass: His Dark Materials, Book I sports a midnight blue map of the cosmos with the zodiacal ram at its center. The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass carry similarly intriguing cover art, and all three titles offer details not seen in the originals: in Compass and Knife, for example, Pullman's stamp-size b&w art introduces each chapter; Spyglass chapters open with literary quotes from Blake, the Bible, Dickinson and more.

A sad ending
I loved the first book and I expected this one to be great, and, after a slow start I finally got into it. In this book we were able to learn more about Will and Mrs Coulter’s greed for Lyra. The end was very sad and I definitely wasn’t expecting it. A great read but I do feel like this book could’ve have been improved.
The Subtle Knife
This is my favourite book ever and I loved reading it. It had so many exciting twists and so much detail. It was also fast-moving. I think everybody should read it and be astonished on how amazing it is! I have read many books and this is my absolute favourite. You SHOULD read or listen to it now. I can’t wait to read number 3.
Clever , gripping
This was a re read from the 90s after just reading the two new , ‘Books of Dust’. Was impressed again at how well written and engaging it was. I had issues with the Amber Spyglass but after re reading it next maybe it will resolve. I began the series with my then 11 year old daughter now over 30 and we are still reading and sharing the books.
