the lost generation’s vacuous wander through a scintillating European summer
spare and scattered prose, apt for an only slightly sympathetic retelling of senseless violence, debauchery, and alcoholism; enjoyed incisive narration towards the end from Jake, the only character whose internal world receives even a fleeting treatment; a little frustrating to read, if intentionally so
