2019. Life changed beyond recognition for Alice when her son, Eddie, was born with autism spectrum disorder. She must do everything to support him, but at what cost to her family? When her cherished grandmother is hospitalised, a hidden box of mementoes reveals a tattered photo of a young man, a tiny leather shoe and a letter. Her grandmother begs Alice to return to Poland to see what became of those she held dearest. In Poland, separated from her family, Alice begins to uncover the story her grandmother is so desperate to tell, and discovers a love that bloomed in the winter of 1942. As a painful family history comes to light, will the struggles of the past and present finally reach a heartbreaking resolution?

The things we cannot say

This book is now definitely one of my top favourite books.
An emotional read and heart wrenching.
Learning so much about each character and the life they lived. So inspiring to read of the history and what they all went through. To modern day with different struggles entirely.

If you need a tear jerker this is it!

Compelling tale of women’s challenging journeys

Rimmer skilfully unrolls this tale with gathering momentum as 2 lives apparently so unrelated converge. The almost unimaginable inhumanity and suffering undergone by innocent Poles is told in parallel with the overwhelming daily challenges of balancing modern family life and relationships. Each narrator grows and develops through the story, the wartime courage and sacrifice of the one as she grows from naive youngest child to refugee mother, becomes the catalyst for the almost reluctant rediscovery of self for the other. Absorbing, horrifying and moving, you may well recognise and reflect on aspects of your own life; well worth the read.

Heartbreaking and beautifully written

The description of this brave family through an horrific time in our history is so well portrayed, I loved it, fell right into the story. Knowing there was some real history there behind it after reading the ending is even more remarkable. Thank you.
