The Ugly Truth follows the aftermath of the release of a video by Melanie Lange, the daughter of a millionaire hotelier who has been a tabloid favourite since her teens. Told through newspaper articles, interview transcripts, social media posts and text messages, you can almost hear the talking heads that would appear if this story were told in a documentary instead. While it is a thriller at its heart, there is also a poignancy to The Ugly Truth, as Melanie’s character is assassinated by complete strangers signing off their posts with a hashtag.
