David Nicholls' highly-anticipated new novel, SWEET SORROW, is out now.

THE UNDERSTUDY is a scintillating comedy of ambition, celebrity, jealousy and love.

For Josh Harper, being in show-business means everything he ever wanted - money, fame, a beautiful wife, and a lead role on the London stage. For Stephen C. McQueen, it means a disastrous career playing passers-by and dead people.

Stephen is stuck with an unfortunate name, a hopeless agent, a daughter he barely knows, and a job as understudy to Josh Harper, the 12th Sexiest Man in the World. And when Stephen falls in love with Josh's clever, funny wife Nora, things get even more difficult.

But might there yet be a way for Stephen to get his Big Break?

THE UNDERSTUDY is a scintillating comedy of ambition, celebrity, jealousy and love.

Not that great

This is the first book that read of the author. One day being number one book I was rally looking forward to this book.

Characters were kind of real but felt they were given too many shades that made them look shallow.

Stephen could have been strong character and no need to show understudy not having strong character. It kind of appears the whole reason looking forward to this book that it will be triumph of underdog was wrong. It is more about if you are struck and cannot get anything in your life then better you move out. Moral of the story is clearly not clear.

Hilarious and touching and so real. Nicholls as always gets it perfect!

The understudy

Not his best. Lead character is too easy to hate. And the entire book was SO offensive to actors. Patronising overall. Frustrating throughout.
